Craftsmanship

All our rugs tell a story and particularly that of the artisans that create them. All our pieces are made using traditional and artisanal hand made techniques both in England and beyond.

Made in England

We pride ourselves in supporting local English craftspeople who continue to make exceptional handcrafted and traditionally woven rugs for our community of design clients. The main two qualities we offer that are made in England are bespoke hand tufted and woven Wilton qualities. Please contact us to find out more about these qualities.

Traditional techniques

Our traditional qualities of bespoke rugs are steeped in history through the ancient techniques of hand knotted and hand woven rugs. Working with skilled artisans in Nepal all our pieces are made by hand to the highest quality with a vast array of materials and construction options at our disposal.

Materials - Know your fibres

Wool

The most practical, durable and easy to maintain fibre, we are huge advocates for the use of wool in rugs and use it in every piece we make. Not only is it renewable but is it also bio-degradable making it an all round  resilient and environmentally considerate fibre. All our UK hand tufted rugs are made in 100% wool pile with the yarn spinning and processing also being local to England.

Here are some other benefits of wool:

-Naturally flame retardent

-Easy to clean and maintain

-Hard wearing and durable

-A natural warmth insulator

-Soft underfoot

-Suitable for domestic and commercial use

Considerations:

Whilst highly durable, wool is not indestructible. Keep an eye out for moths and act quickly if stains or spillages occur that may bleach or discolour the yarn (i.e animal urine)

See our Rug care guide for more information on how to best look after your wool rugs.

Bamboo Silk

A plant based alternative to the traditional (silk worm) silk, this highly popular and luxurious yarn is widely used in contemporary rug making and is recognised for being renewable, vegan, soft to the touch with a silk like appearance that is almost impossible to tell apart from its traditional counterpart.

Bamboo silk has many positive attributes, a key one being that it is a more affordable alternative to traditional silk (approx 25-30% less expensive). Most of our hand knotted designs incorporate the use of bamboo silk whether in pattern motifs or accents and always ins conjunction with wool.

Considerations:

The main consideration when incorporating Bamboo silk is the area it is used in. Unlike wool or traditional silk (protein based fibres) Bamboo is a cellulose fibre which is more delicate and should be given greater care and consideration to the space it is used in. We recommend having a protective treatment applied to rugs that incorporate Bamboo to give added protection and to avoid the use of Bamboo in areas that are likely to get wet (Bamboo will water mark)

Silk

The epitome of luxury. Silk has been used for centuries in handicraft of all forms and rugs are no exception. The most durable of the luxury yarns, a hand knotted rug woven in wool and silk is the highest quality rug that we produce and if adequately cared for will be passed on for generations to come.

Considerations:

As is the case with all fibres prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause the colours to fade. Silk can be particularly susceptible to this and it is recommended that rugs are not placed in areas with direct sunlight. Rotate the rug periodically to allow for even wear.

Like other luxury yarns it is recommended to act fast in the event of spillages and given the value of silk rugs, if a stain is particularly significant or difficult to manage yourself, it is always best to consult a professional.
